Skip's Edtech Jobs: March 9, 2024

The new job board website is live!

Thank you for reading the EdSkipper, Skip’s newsletter about skipping from education to education-aligned careers. Every Saturday, I send out a list of curated remote jobs. I post jobs weekdays on Skip’s Job Board.

The new website is live! Over the coming week, I’ll be sunsetting jobskip.io and redirecting everyone to the (much better named) edskip.com.

As newsletter subscribers, you get early access to the new site!

You can now find Skip’s jobs at edskip.com!

As you can see from the screenshot above, there are some big improvements to the site. You can now search jobs (by keyword or by company name, for example) as well as filter by the job’s target audience (educator, edtech employee, or candidate with relevant skills).

All filters are available to everyone with a free or paid account.

I’ve also added two frequently requested filters to the job board: search by salary and location-specific jobs!

Searching by salary lets you rule out jobs that don’t meet your income needs. Only want to see roles paying at least $80k? Six figures roles looking for educator skills? You can do that! I’ve been having fun setting it to $250k. (The only hiccup: it doesn’t always accurately reflect sales/customer success salaries. Some companies just say ‘commission’ rather than include an OTE number which means I can only include their base salary in the sort. I’m still trying to thread the needle and communicate the most useful info in those instances.)

You can now find location-specific roles on the website again! On the premium side, I’ve started adding location-specific roles from all the 300+ companies I check each week. Starting this week, I’m sharing featured location-specific roles with everyone.

Since many companies hire in multiple states (or across time zones), we’ve set up the backend to accommodate that variation. When I type in “Maine,” I’ll see any job that is hiring explicitly in: Maine, the Northeast, or the Eastern time zone. It also accommodates states that span two time zones — for example, Tennessee will pull jobs looking for Eastern and Central time zones.

One of the key questions I hear from educators all the time is: how do I tell if I’m the right fit for this role?

With the new site, I’ve created more robust ‘audience’ tags to let you see at a glance what the ‘knockout’ experience for the role is. For example, if the company is looking for teaching experience plus 2 years edtech experience, I tag this as ‘edtech experience.’

Then I’ve sorted out when companies are looking for ‘edtech experience’ (SME in edtech) versus ‘relevant skills’ (skills demonstrated in any industry). The latter are often open to career pivoters (‘edskippers’) & your multi-tasking super powers mean you’re frequently a great fit for these roles.

I hope these changes help you identify the roles you’re most competitive for (and encourage you to banish imposter syndrome by seeing more roles you are qualified for!).

I’m still building out the number of free roles on the site. My goal is to share 10-20% of the roles I curate for premium members (depending on the season). This means you’ll see more free jobs than I shared on the old job board!

For premium subscribers, this coming week I’ll be transitioning from updating jobs once a week to adding new jobs — free and paid — every weekday! This won’t change the overall number of jobs I curate, but it will mean you’ll see them sooner. (And it means that jobs that close will be removed from the site faster.) Currently, all jobs are available as of Friday afternoon. (You can always check the dates on the individual job cards.)

I’ll be testing just the right cadence for when to check each company page. One hiccup I anticipate as I do this are ‘phantom jobs’ popping up. Some sites post a job and then take it down within 2-3 hours or overnight. I don’t see this with every company but I run into it enough to mention. (Brainstorming happening in the background to resolve this issue.)

My other project will be to expand the database I use to source all jobs. That will increase the number of jobs you see! For example, I can now easily share jobs from companies that hire in only 26 states. I have some cool companies I’ll add this week. And I’m going to go on a LinkedIn scavenger hunt to find more great companies that aren’t in my current database but hire remotely, pay well, and hire educators.

Finally, I’m offering a special newsletter-only launch discount for a premium subscription. Use the code EDSKIPPER (make sure to hit ‘apply’ in the Stripe promo code box to activate). You’ll get 3-months of access for the equivalent of $10/month — for as long as you’re continuously subscribed. (This code can only be used to purchase a 3-month plan. Code expires end of March.)

Use EDSKIPPER to purchase the JUMP plan for $30! (Expires end of March)

As always, we appreciate hearing about any bugs you might find as we continue to add new users to the site. (We welcome feedback too!)

We’ve had only a few issues since we launched to paid subscribers last week. One reason is because folks reached out quickly to us with the two bugs they experienced; that allowed us to fix them before they impacted more people. (Thank you again to those folks!) The other reason is my husband is a really great software engineer! (Both the bugs were, um, caused by something I did.)

~I hope you find some fantastic jobs to apply to this weekend,
Chelsea
